Introduction

Cape Town is a global centre for the treatment of substance abuse. The clinic is set on a luxury estate in a beautiful valley, and has assembled the best clinicians to ever come together in any facility the country has previously had to offer. All have either, a recognised degree and vast experience in addictions, or have been working as addicts in recovery for many years at other facilities. Focusing on addictions treatment, the Clinic provides specialised care for alcohol abuse, substance abuse, eating disorders, co- dependency and, uniquely in South Africa, nicotine cessation.

As a non-profit organisation, the clinic has the personal endorsement of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Programme overview

The Clinic prides itself on using evidence-based techniques that are supported by research, and has established validity and a proven track record in real- world settings. The multi-disciplinary team consists of psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and carefully vetted lay counsellors. The treatment approach is grounded in the tried and tested Minnesota model, which has a strong element of 12-step facilitation. The traditional focus on understanding the addictive process and sharing personal consequences of using is incorporated.

Clients are also taught specific techniques for managing difficult feeling- states and situations that elicit cravings. Providing a thorough grasp of these skills, along with enhancing the motivation to use them, is one of many things that sets the Clinic apart from other treatment centres. Both internal relapse prevention skills and the ability to use the external support structures of 12- step fellowship groups are key elements to a successful recovery.

A thorough assessment process ensures that clients are allocated the best treatment option based on their needs, motivation and financial considerations. Treatment consists of the following:

• One-on-one counselling
• Focussed group therapy, in which patients are guided to face the reality of their addiction
• Lectures, providing didactic presentations on understanding addictions, the impact on the individual and family, life-skills, and tools for managing emotions
• Holistic therapies, including yoga, NIA dancing and meditation
• 12-Step facilitation, including regular attendance at an appropriate 12- step group and guidance through the steps themselves
• Spiritual guidance, by two of South Africa’s highly regarded spiritual leaders.

Facilities and accommodation

Situated in the beautiful valley of Hout Bay, 20 minutes from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and the CBD, the Clinic offers first class accommodation for all patients.

VIP Suites

The Clinic is the only facility in South Africa that has four exclusive self-contained suites for those who need discreet and more private accommodation during their treatment process. Each unit, which has been tastefully furnished by a top interior design company, comprises a master bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and private lounge with satellite TV.

Family Suites

Client’s families have the option of utilising the on-site family accommodation. Each suite consists of a master, and a single bedroom, private bathroom and lounge area. The benefits of this are that the family can stay together as a unit during this time and take part more fully in the programme. All meals are provided for and transport into central Cape Town can also be arranged.
