Research released about link between substance abuse and PTSD
Recent research has suggested that a significant proportion of people who seek treatment for substance abuse suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
This is particular true of those who are drug rather than alcohol dependent, said researchers at the University Medical Centre Berlin and the Bielefeld Hospital in Germany.
Furthermore, they argued that those who suffer from PTSD are more likely to experience a worst outcome from substance abuse in the study published in the March issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research
Martin Driessen, professor of psychiatry at Ev Hospital Bielefeld in Germany, said he was "surprised" at the extent of this difference, with PTSD around 30 per cent more prevalent in subjects who were drug-dependent rather than those who were alcohol-dependent.
Andreas Heinz, director and chair of the department of psychiatry at the Charite-University Medical Centre. Berlin said: "The subjects suffering from PTSD had higher hospitalisation rates, shorter periods of abstinence and higher drug craving."
Researchers also identified gender differences, with the study revealing that women are more likely to show clinical depression which leads to alcohol dependence, whereas men more often show symptoms of depression following alcohol dependence.
A recent study has suggested that both genetic and environmental factors influence the likelihood of someone developing a PTSD.
