Home secretary Jacqui Smith wants to open up an existing law that permits officers to take alcohol off children only if they have a reasonable suspicion they will drink it.

She said she has written to police chiefs reminding them of their powers on under-age drinking, in preventing drinking in problem areas and closing worrisome premises.

A zero-tolerance attitude to underage drinking over four weeks in England and Wales in October and November last year had seen the confiscation of 6,500 pints of alcohol, she added.

She said: "Nearly half of the alcohol obtained by young people appears to come from the family home.

"It's clear that parents have to hear the message as well."
