Reality TV star Nicole Richie has signed up for an 18-month alcohol education programme, it has been revealed.

Papers filed with the Superior Court of California show that Ms Richie enrolled in the SB 38 Alcohol Programme on September 26th.

According to the Santa Barbara Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse website, the course is mandatory for anyone who has been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol more than once in seven years.

Ms Richie was sentenced for DUI on July 27th this year, following on from a similar misdemeanour in June 2003.

The SB 38 programme comprises 52 hours of alcaholism counselling, one-on-one interviews which take place twice a week and 12 hours of alcohol education.

Meanwhile, those who partake in the programme are also advised to attend 12-step meetings - a course of principles developed by Alcoholics Anonymous for addicts.

Ms Richie is currently pregnant with her first child, which is due this winter.
