More seek treatment for alcohol addiction

The number of people seeking treatment for alcohol problems in the Welsh county of Merthyr Tydfil has increased by more than 40 per cent in the last year, new figures reveal.

The new figures from Health Solutions Wales show throughout the country 15,415 people were treated - up from 10,899 the previous year.

In Merthyr more than 800 people were seen.

Merthyr and Rhymney assembly member Huw Lewis told the Western Mail: "Alcohol misuse affects a large number of individuals and their families, whether here in Merthyr or in communities across the country.

"While the rise in people being treated is, I feel, a positive and necessary step, there is still a job for government in raising awareness of the dangers of alcohol misuse.

"Problems with alcohol abuse are complex and vary from case to case. However, the current lack of night-time leisure provision in Merthyr, apart from in its pubs, cannot be helpful in changing the current damaging culture."
