Massive UK investment in drug treatment unveiled
The government has announced new proposals to invest almost 1 billion pounds in a new programme of treatments for drug addicts and users.
In what she described as a strategy to get people "off drugs and drug-related crime", home secretary Jacqui Smith announced a number of new initiatives including increasing the use of community services, working to stop drug imports into the country and developing further support for drug treatment.
Ms Smith said that while the government will continue "to send a clear message that drug use is unacceptable", it will also ensure that it will "provide help for those who are trying to turn their lives around, to get off drugs and into work".
Referring to the section of the proposals that could see drug addicts losing their benefits, she added that the government expects "drug users to take responsibility".
Under the new plans, benefit claimants who say they are unable to work because of an addiction will be required to sign up for a treatment programme.
Those who fail to arrive for a session will have their benefits cut for two weeks. This period will be extended dramatically if the addict continues to miss the sessions.
According to the Home Office, the number of people getting drug treatment has more than doubled in the last year.
