Hip hop language to provide alcohol message
South Africa is hoping to reach out to young people in their own language - that of the musical genre of hip hop.
The government believes that it is important to speak to young people in a language with which they can identify and hopes that, by using hip hop, it will be able to communicate messages about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
The deputy minister of social development, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs, told the Hip Hop Roundtable that abuse is "the new threat to the development of our children", according to BuaNews.
"A concerted, highly visible, protracted and integrated campaign has to be initiated to divert the children who may be at risk," she said.
The minister continued: "We will help young people to identify their own aspirations and define a practical path towards realising them."
However, a recent report in the Journal of Women's Health warned that exposure to rap music can contribute to alcohol abuse, noting that "the glamorised depictions of alcohol use are often portrayed in conjunction with sexual imagery and portrayals of drug use are often depicted as normal".
