Ministers have pledged millions of pounds to help tackle the problem of alcohol abuse in Wales.

Welsh Assembly social justice minister Brian Gibbons announced a new ten-year substance-misuse strategy, to tackle the rising problem of drug and alcohol abuse in the country.

An extra £12 million was announced to deal with the growing problem of excessive drinking, according to the Western Mail, which reported that Dr Gibbons said: "We've all got to take stock of our drinking habits."

Dr Gibbons expressed alarm at the rising numbers of people drinking irresponsibly, saying that up to 40 per cent of people are drinking more than is recommended and 20 per cent are binge drinking during the weekend.

Frank Soodeen of Alcohol Concern told the Western Mail that the charity is "delighted" about the assembly's focus on reducing alcohol misuse, adding: "It’s critical for any strategic efforts to reduce harmful drinking to bring money to the table."

According to the BBC, the new strategy will also see support being given to other substance abusers, through investment in youth work and an expansion of relevant services including helplines
