Figures show increase in hospital alcohol admissions
Alcohol-related admissions into hospitals in Britain have soared since the licensing laws changed in 2005, according to new figures obtained by the Conservatives.
Nationally, there have been 26 per cent more alcohol admissions to hospital casualty departments, jumping from 128,000 in 2005 to 162,000 last year, stated the statistics released by the Department of Health.
James Brokenshire, shadow home affairs minister, said in a press release that these statistics "focus the real cost of excessive alcohol consumption and the pressures faced by hospital casualty departments", accusing the government of being "cavalier and irresponsible" for introducing 24-hour drinking.
Some regions have apparently been affected more seriously by the introduction of 24-hour drinking in the country, with the figures showing that alcohol related admissions were up 37 per cent in the East Midlands by 2007.
Mr Brokenshire called for more powers for local communities to have "much stronger control" over the allocation of licenses, as well as "targeted taxation".
Alistair Darling introduced the first tax hikes on alcohol since Labour came to power in his inaugural Budget last month.
