More money needs to be spent on alcohol treatment in Scotland, according to medical experts.

At the Glasgow Addiction Services Christmas conference in Clydebank Dr Bruce Ritson, chairman of the Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (Shaap), said funding was often focused on drug addicts but alcohol causes just as many problems.

The BBC reports that Dr Ritson said GPs and hospital staff should be taught how to recognise alcohol abuse at an early stage, and give advice on getting help.

According to Shaap, alcohol kills six people in Scotland every day and people are twice as likely to die of an alcohol-related health problem in Scotland than in the rest of the UK.

It says the number of people diagnosed with alcoholic liver disease has increased by 52 per cent since 1998.
