Children are being exposed to alcohol advertising on a regular basis, a report by Alcohol Concern has revealed.

A new report by the alcohol agency looked at the number of drinks adverts shown before and after the watershed during two weeks in December 2006 and March 2007.

The researchers found that the number of drink-related adverts rose dramatically during the hours of 15:00 and 17:00, when children were likely to be returning from school.

In addition, programmes found to be carrying drinks adverts included The Simpsons, Home and Away, The X-Factor and Coronation Street, all of which are watched by a family audience.

Alcohol Concern's chief executive, Srabani Sen, pointed out that Ofcom had refused to consult on a watershed ban when it tightened the rules three years ago to protect children.

"Our report, when coupled with the evidence on the impact of alcohol advertising on children, shows that it is time to revisit this decision," the chief executive claimed.

"In our view a watershed ban is the only way to give parents the peace of mind of knowing that their children can be kept safe from the influence of advertising."
