Published recently in the American Psychological Association's Behavioral Neuroscience journal, the findings of these common comorbid conditions sought to examine their combined treatment.

Lead author of the Indiana University medical school research Andrew Chambers said addiction was often seen in people diagnosed with a mental illness and both were linked to the walnut-shaped amygdalas.

These ranged from smoking to cocaine addiction and anxiety disorders to schizophrenia and depression.

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has recently announced a trial into a new drug called Chantix, which it believes could control and reduce alcohol dependence.
