400million pounds set aside for addiction treatment

The government has announced almost £400 million worth of funding for addiction treatment in 2008/09.

Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said the funding would build on existing treatment programmes.

She said that record numbers of people are entering and staying in addiction treatment services.

It was also announced that the budget for addiction treatment is changing this year so that allocations are per person treated, rather than by formula.

Ms Primarolo said: "For every £1 spent on treatment, at least £9.50 is saved in crime and health costs.
"The move towards allocating funding in a fairer way - per person treated - will ensure that this treatment is focused where it is most needed."

The move was welcomed by the National Treatment Agency (NTA).

NTA chief executive, Paul Hayes, said: "This revised formula for allocations, part of a process begun in 2007/08, provides sufficient resources to those partnerships who have historically received lower levels of funding per person treated to enable them to deliver their treatment plans, whilst also providing a realistic timescale for those areas receiving less to make more efficient use of the resources available to them."
