Article: Young people discuss problems with virtual doctors
Teenagers with addiction problems can now discuss their situation in confidence with a virtual doctor, through the role-playing site Second Life.
Spanish health authorities launched the virtual advice centre to encourage young people to discuss potentially embarrassing problems such as drugs and sexually transmitted diseases.
The virtual centre will be staffed by real doctors who will be online throughout the week to answer teenagers’ questions.
The Second Life health portal – Health Island - was set up by the Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine (FYC) and the Coalition for Citizens with Chronic Illnesses.
The ‘island’ will also contain detailed health information and advice. The FYC plans to expand this scheme and launch a similar format for chronic conditions in the next six months.
