Article: US teens learn to combat alcohol abuse
A group of schoolchildren in the US state of Wyoming have been learning about alcohol abuse issues and discovering how to influence change within their communities.
A national organisation called Take it Back has been training students to recognise the influence they can have, both on their own health and on society in general.
Dillon Levi, a student at Laramie High School, was one of 11 students who helped to plan the event with the Albany County Coalition to Prevent Substance Abuse and the Platte County Prevention Council.
"I really wanted to get involved with this because we think there's a problem in our high school, and there are kids who have problems with drinking and see alcohol and drugs as an outlet," he told local newspaper the Laramie Boomerang.
"It's training for us
to learn how we can effectively and meaningfully affect these kids' lives without being judgmental," he explained.
Dillon also revealed that, while young people are sick of the extent of alcohol abuse in the community, they need the help and support of local parents in order to make a difference.
A recent state-sponsored study found that 75 per cent of sixth-grade students obtained their last alcoholic beverage from an adult.
"Stop supplying alcohol for kids," he urged. "You have a huge influence on your kids' life. More than you think. They're watching your actions. Live through your actions."
