Article: Those with alcohol problems advised to seek support before Christmas

According to alcohol rehabilitation experts the Christmas holiday period can often be slow for the industry as addicts put off treatment until the new year, however those with alcohol problems are being encouraged to seek help now, ahead of this difficult period.

"There is much industry-wide speculation as to why admissions slow down in December but it is no coincidence that it is so holiday driven," said the CARE Drug Rehabilitation Center in Central Florida.

It made the point that depression, loneliness, binge eating, stressful family gatherings, and tight purse strings combined with relapses and a waning economy make for the "perfect storm" for an addict.

Work Christmas parties, family get-togethers and the general social scene can be hard for alcoholics who are trying to abstain from drinking.

However, recovering alcoholics who choose to abstain from drinking are less likely to relapse than those following an alternative strategy, researchers have said, therefore it is important to seek support over this time.

A new study looked at more than 1,700 adults who were in recovery from alcoholism.

Participants were either abstainers; low-risk drinkers who were not deemed to be at risk of relapse; or asymptomatic risk drinkers who consumed more than the recommended guidelines but were not deemed to be alcohol dependent.

Publishing their findings in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, the scientists reveal that alcoholics who were abstainers at the start of the study (2001/02) were most likely to still be in recovery in 2004/05.
