Teenage girls are worse binge drinkers that boys, according to the latest research, which suggests that nearly a quarter of 15-year-old girls get drunk at least once a week.

The study, conducted by the Schools Health Education Unit and involving more than 20,000 children, revealed that despite the overall number of children drinking alcohol falling over recent years, there has been an increasing hard core of heavy drinking youngsters.

Figures show that 23 per cent of 14 and 15-year-old girls and 21 per cent of similarly-aged boys drink heavily at least once a week.

"There is more alcohol going down fewer throats and this is not the trend we wanted to see," said David Regis, research manager of the Schools Health Education Unit.

Mr Regis suggested that anti-drink advertising could explain the overall fall in teenage drinking, but pointed out that children who witness older brothers and sisters drinking alcohol "see them as role models".

Spirits seem to be particularly popular among teenage girls, with nearly a fifth claiming to drink them weekly and five per cent admitting to drinking five or more measures a week.

Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians, commented: "This binge drinking culture is now going right down into early teenage years and we need to find a way to change this as young people who start drinking in this way are more likely to become alcohol-dependent in the future."
