For many alcoholics, the first step to recovery is the acceptance that they are addicted to alcohol. For Murdoch MacDonald, however, the first stage of his recovery was taken when he realised that he was in fact addicted to the escape afforded by alcohol, rather than the drug itself.

Writing on his website, the recovered alcoholic reveals that he had been planning to study for a PhD before he and his wife Lilian started drinking heavily and ended up being thrown out of their lodgings.

"It was not alcohol that we had been addicted to, but the escape that alcohol had afforded us. Escape from our lives, or aspects of our lives that we had been unable to cope with," he revealed.

Mr MacDonald said that he realised that if he identified and confronted his issues and demons, he might be able to drink responsibly again in the future.

"We wanted to be able to drink responsibly again because alcohol (used sensibly) is one of life's simple pleasures," he explained.

The journalist said that he and his wife are now content and are able to "drink normally" again.

"And I would like to think that, better late than never, I am at last beginning to realise some of the potential that I had within me…nearly 30 years ago," he added.

Around five per cent of people in the UK are thought to be physically addicted to alcohol, and a further 15 per cent drink at damaging levels, all of whom could benefit from seeking alcohol treatment.
