A programme designed to address binge drinking on a community level has been proving popular in Australia and could provide a template for similar initiatives in other nations, it has emerged.

The Australian Drug Foundation's Good Sports programme has been adopted by some 2,000 clubs since 2001 and is helping to reduce levels of alcohol abuse.

Sporting clubs are now helped to manage alcohol consumption and reduce alcohol-related problems after evidence suggested they were promoting excessive drinking and acting as a breeding ground for alcohol abuse.

Members of clubs involved in the initiative drink less than half the amount of alcohol consumed by those of unregistered clubs, according to recent research by the Centre for Youth Drug Studies, and the programme's national manager Tony Kiers said that it was "clearly fulfilling a need in the community".

"We're constantly seeing headlines about sports stars struggling with alcohol problems, or behaving badly after a big night out. But those issues aren't just a problem at the top, local clubs have concerns about alcohol use too," he pointed out.

"The Good Sports programme helps clubs to manage alcohol responsibly and create a more welcoming, family-friendly environment for members and supporters," Mr Kiers added.

Home Office estimates suggest that some 8.2 million people in England drink above the sensible levels, with approximately 1.1 million deemed to be alcohol dependent.
