Article: Parents appreciate extent of teenagers' drinking
New research indicates that the majority of parents have a reasonable idea of how much and how often their children consume alcohol and take drugs.
Researchers at the University of Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) found that over a six-month period, 86 per cent of parents accurately evaluated the level of their teenager's alcohol use.
In addition, 82 per cent of parents accurately evaluated their teenager's tobacco smoking, and 86 per cent were accurate in reporting cannabis use.
Lead researcher Dr Neil McGillicuddy, a research scientist at RIA, said: "It seems that, despite a few exceptions, many parents do know the extent of their teenager's substance use.
"Parents can use this knowledge to help themselves cope with teenage substance use and the resulting stress on the family, as well as to begin conversations with their teen about making changes."
Dr McGillicuddy noted that parenting programmes can give parents the skills to deal with teenagers' behaviour.
He concluded: "What we would hope that people come away with from this study, is that parents can be more aware of their teen's substance use by reducing their own alcohol use, giving more attention to what their teen is doing 24/7, particularly if the teen is younger, and taking steps to reduce their own psychological distress."
The study is published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse.
