Liverpool has hailed a recent campaign to curb binge drinking a success, as rates in the city have dropped, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The local primary care trust (PCT) recently launched the Winter Pssst! campaign to tackle alcohol-related problems in the city.

Research carried out by the North West Public Health Observatory has estimated that Liverpool is no longer the binge drinking capital of the north-west, having been replaced by neighbouring Manchester.

Nationwide, Liverpool was estimated to be the seventh worst local authority area in the UK for binge drinking, an improvement from its last placement as second worst, while Newcastle gained the unwanted accreditation for having the worst problem for excessive drinking.

And the apparent success has been attributed to the European capital of culture's alcohol awareness campaign.

Chair of Liverpool PCT and city alcohol champion Gideon Ben-Tovim told the local paper that this was "encouraging news", adding: "There is a lot more to do but we are committed to reducing the negative impact that alcohol, and particularly binge drinking, has on the productivity and image of the city."

Liverpool PCT has pledged an extra £10 million over the next three years to tackle alcohol-related issues in the city, paying for targeted support including educational tools and a rapid-response paramedic scheme.
