Article: Institutes win award for addiction documentary
Two of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) have won an award for their work on a 14-part TV documentary that raises awareness of alcoholism and the benefits of alcohol treatment.
'Addiction' reveals the science behind drug and alcohol addiction and the possible treatment options and has been awarded the prestigious Governors Award by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
NIH director Dr Elias Zerhouni said of the documentary, which was watched by 13 million people, that it "gave us the opportunity to reach out to millions of Americans with a message of hope".
Dr Nora Volkow, who accepted the award on behalf of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said: "If science-based treatment principles are followed, addiction treatment can work, and people can reclaim their lives."
Nearly one in ten British men and one in 20 women drinkers have an alcohol problem, figures show, but alcohol treatment has been found to help people overcome their addictions and move on with their lives.
