Alcohol specialists are going into classrooms in west Lothian to help educate children about the dangers of consuming too much alcohol.

Medical research has shown that educating youngsters can help to prevent them from becoming alcoholics in later life.

In addition, a recent study revealed that alcoholics who achieve a high level of education are more likely to benefit from alcohol treatment than those who are educated to a lower level.

The West Lothian Drug Action Team (WLDAT) is therefore taking part in local children's maths lessons to help them count the cost of excessive drinking.

The team's research and development officer, Hilary Smith, told the Scotsman: "We welcome the instigation of a national awareness week for alcohol.

"It's vital that we get involved at a local level to ensure the messages are communicated effectively to local communities."

The initiative is part of Scotland's National Alcohol Awareness Week.
