Article: Camden council joins PCT to tackle alcoholism
A London borough is taking positive steps to tackle drinking after research revealed that 46,000 people in Camden are putting their health at risk by consuming too much alcohol.
The figures indicate that over a quarter of residents are at risk, including around 9,000 people with alcohol dependence.
The council has therefore joined up with the local primary care trust (PCT) to encourage debate on how to improve the situation and help people in need of alcohol treatment.
Dr Jo Copping, consultant in public health medicine at Camden Primary Care Trust, said: "Reducing the harm caused by alcohol is an important priority for Camden PCT.
"This new strategy outlines how we will work with our partners to alleviate the damage to the health and wellbeing of our residents resulting from alcohol misuse."
The joint report details ways in which the council and PCT aim to tackle drinking, including initiatives that build on current successful projects in the local area.
Areas to be focussed on include ensuring residents get timely help and advice on alcohol treatment, and providing long-term help to prevent people from suffering a relapse after seeking treatment.
