There have been renewed calls for better alcohol treatment provision in South Wales after figures show the number of alcohol related deaths in the region has doubled over the last decade.

A total of 407 deaths in South Wales were attributed to drink in 2005 compared to just 199 in 1992, the South Wales Echo reports.

Dr Tony Jewell, the chief medical officer for Wales, said: "Alcohol related-deaths are a serious concern. The increasing culture of binge drinking, particularly among young people, is leading to greater risk of injury, road traffic crashes, unsafe sex and anti-social behaviour. It will also lead to serious health issues in later life.

"Reducing alcohol consumption is a top priority."

To tackle the problem the Welsh Assembly Government has increased funding to tackle substance misuse from £3.3 million in 2002-03 to £22 million in 2007-08.

The money will be used to tackle both treatment and prevention.
