Article: Warning about alcoholism in the hospitality sector
New analysis of US government statistics has revealed that workers in the hospitality sector are most at risk of alcoholism.
According to the statistics, published by EurekAlert, 17.4 per cent of males and 12.6 per cent of females in the hospitality industry suffer from "hazardous alcohol use" - an average of 15 per cent of the sector.
Chief executive officer of the National Business Coalition on Health Andrew Webber is quoted by the website as saying: "The impact of alcohol problems in the workplace is a tremendous hidden challenge [
] in part because very few people with an alcohol problem are ever identified."
Also significantly at risk, according to the research, are those in the construction and wholesale trade industries, with average rates of alcoholism at 14.7 per cent and 11.9 per cent respectively.
Other professions with disproportionately high rates of alcoholism were found to include finance and real estate, retail, professional and manufacturing.
The news follows a public health minister announcement that 60,000 UK doctors are to be specially trained to deal with alcohol abuse in the next ten years.
