Article: UK 'only developed nation with rising liver deaths'
A report released by the Department of Health reveals that Britain is the only developed nation where deaths from liver disease are rising.
According to the Daily Mail NHS medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh said in a report on liver disease: "Liver disease is a significant issue.
"It is the fifth more important cause of death in the UK - which is the only developed nation with an upward trend in mortality.
"Increasing numbers of younger people are dying from liver disease. Yet liver disease is almost entirely preventable."
The paper claims the report was marked "restricted" by the Department of Health and includes a six-point plan to detect the disease earlier and improve treatment.
"It aims to tackle the three main causes liver disease - alcohol, obesity and viral hepatitis B and C - and develop a national registry of patients and a comprehensive alcohol liaison service," it said.
Recent figures show alcohol-related fatalities in the UK have doubled in 15 years, up from 4,144 in 1991 to 8,758 in 2006.
