Article: Teenage binge drinking figures for north-west published
New research has revealed the worrying extent of alcohol abuse among teenagers in Britain today.
A study carried out by the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University found that over 65 per cent of 15 to 16-year-olds in the north-west of England are each drinking around 67 bottles of wine or 267 pints of beer every year.
The report also noted the prevalence of binge drinking among those living in more deprived areas.
Of those surveyed, 34 per cent said they bought their own alcohol, while over 48 per cent said their alcohol was provided by their parents. But figures show that those whose parents bought their drink were less likely to binge drink.
The study found evidence of violence and irresponsible sexual behaviour as a result of excessive alcohol consumption - of those who drink at least once a week, nearly 40 per cent of females and 42 per cent of males admitted to violent behaviour and 20.7 per cent of females and 15.4 per cent of males reported they have regretted sex following drinking.
It was concluded in the report that parents need to be better informed about teen drinking and children need to be better educated about the risks associated with irresponsible alcohol consumption.
In related news, councillors in Fife recently suggested alcohol awareness exams in secondary schools to help tackle rising teen drinking problems.
