Article: Researchers say alcoholics need to be more aware of symptoms
Alcoholics are insufficiently aware of the symptoms and possible impact of gastrointestinal bleeding, which could lead to damaging results, according to research recently carried out in Germany.
The study, published in Deutsches Aerzteblatt International, involved discussions with over 400 people with high alcohol consumption. Researchers led by Niels Teich looked at how they would respond to symptoms such as the vomiting of blood and the passage of black stools.
Many of the participants said they would probably only seek medical advice for these symptoms after a considerable delay. Only 71 per cent of those asked said they would contact an emergency physician after vomiting blood.
Sufferers of gastrointestinal bleeding require an emergency endoscopy - the longer this is delayed, the worse the prognosis for the condition. A considerable delay could result in heavier blood loss and necessitate intensive medical monitoring and increased transfusion requirements.
Researchers found that women and those who had more contact with doctors were more likely to contact a medical professional immediately.
Although the research was not sufficiently representative, researchers concluded that alcoholics need to be made more aware of the symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding so they can seek help earlier.
Other symptoms of the condition could include a dry mouth, thirst, urinating less than usual and a shortness of breath.
