Article: Research shows speedy advantage of rehab
New research suggests that drug and alcohol addicts who attend a rehabilitation programme show a marked improvement in mental health and confidence after just a few weeks
A study carried out by researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia found that addicts showed a considerable improvement in their behaviour and confidence levels within a short period of time.
Researchers studied 120 patients at the Salvation Army's residential drug treatment program at the Morisset rehabilitation centre.
And they found marked developments within three weeks of the ten-month programme.
Dr Peter Kelly of the university's Institute for Mental Health said this included "improvements in their mental health and their confidence to manage their substance misuse".
The researchers will assess whether these developments are retained at the end of the three-month-long programme.
A new survey studying the attitude of Australians towards alcohol found that although the average Australian man consumes 7.6 standard drinks on a typical night out - almost four times the recommended daily allowance - 79 per cent of those surveyed do not think they drink too much.
