Article: President Bush speaks about beating alcohol addiction
George W Bush has spoken in more detail about how he defeated his problems with alcohol addiction to become the most powerful man in the world.
During a visit to the Jericho Programme, a project of Episcopal Community Services of Maryland, President Bush said: "Addiction is hard to overcome. As you might remember, I drank too much at one time in my life."
"I understand addiction, and I understand how a changed heart can help you deal with addiction," he told the two men who had been treated at the centre for drug problems.
"There's some kind of commonality."
Mr Bush decided to quit drinking the day after his 40th-birthday celebration on July 6th, 1986.
Speaking in 2003 he said: "I know firsthand what it takes to quit drinking, and it takes something other than a textbook or a manual."
His comments have been praised by alcohol treatment specialists who said his admission helps relieve some of the stigma attached to seeking help for alcohol problems.
