Article: President Bush encourages others to stick with addiction treatment
Speaking to young people with drug and alcohol problems president George W Bush encouraged the recovering addicts to preserver with their treatment, citing his own experiences as an example.
"Your president made the same kind of choice and I had to quit drinking, and addiction competes for your affection ... you fall in love with alcohol," ABC News reports President Bush as saying to the teenagers.
"I doubt I'd be standing here if I hadn't quit drinking whiskey, and beer and wine and all that," he said later to a reporter.
President Bush stopped drinking in 1986 after his 40th birthday.
"I had too much to drink one night, and the next day I didn't have any," Mr Bush said. "The next day I decided to quit and I haven't had a drink since 1986."
He said he made the decision to stop drinking when he realised drinking was interfering with his family.
"It was the competition that I decided just wasn't worth it," he said in the television interview.
