Article: Police chief calls for action over binge-drinking
A police chief has called for immediate action to stop teenage binge drinking and criticised the ease with which youngsters can purchase alcohol.
New information released by the Home Office has revealed that fifty percent of alcohol supplied to teenagers is bought over the counter.
In an interview with the BBC, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers Ken Jones said that the UK has a "real problem", where teenagers are being given alcohol by their family or buying it in local shops.
He also hit out at drinks companies for marketing their products towards young people.
Mr Jones told the BBC that teenage binge drinking has reached "epidemic proportions" and that it is time to take a "hard look" at how to tackle the growing problem. He said the root of the problem that needs to be solved is how teenagers are accessing the alcohol.
The Liberal Democrats yesterday revealed figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act which indicated that the number of under-18s being treated in UK hospitals after drinking irresponsibly has risen by 35 per cent in the last six years.
