Article: Only a small percentage of transplant patients return to substance abuse, says study
Research suggests that the risk of relapse for former substance abusers who have had an organ transplant is very small.
A meta-analysis of existing literature on the subject led by Mary Amanda Dew of the University of Pittsburgh found that only around four per cent of former illicit drug users and six per cent of former alcoholics will relapse.
An editorial by Michael Lucey and colleagues of the University of Wisconsin Medical School in the February issue of Liver Transplantation commented that "for the addiction specialist, the persistence of sobriety after transplantation is surprising and unexplained".
The researchers looked at the results of 54 studies, focusing on over 3,600 former substance abusers who had received transplants.
They also examined which groups were at a higher risk of returning to their former habit, finding that those with low social support, short abstinence times and a family alcohol history posed the most danger of future substance abuse.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has reported a study carried out by doctors at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle that found over a quarter of heart transplant patients start smoking again after their operation.
