Article: New alcohol treatment service in Scotland
A new programme offering advice to alcoholics and those who drink alcohol in excess is being extended across parts of Scotland.
Following a successful pilot in the Stewartry district of Dumfries and Galloway involving doctors advising patients about alcohol consumption, the scheme will now be rolled out across the region.
The pilot involved doctors offering alcohol advice to patients whose medical conditions may be linked to alcohol consumption.
Over a six-month period, GPs at seven different practices screened more than 260 patients.
The programme advises offering advice or referral to counselling or detoxification of patients who are found to have been drinking too much.
During the trial, 60 patients were offered support after results showed they had been drinking to excess and a third reported they had reduced their alcohol intake after three months.
In Scotland, justice secretary Kenny MacAskill has suggested that those who sell alcohol should be taxed, with money raised going towards increased spending on treatments and counseling for alcoholics.
