Article: Men drinking twice as much as women
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that men are drinking twice as much alcohol as women.
ONS data showed that, in 2006, men drank an average of 18.7 units a week, compared with nine units for women.
It also revealed that 21 per cent of men and 11 per cent of women had drunk on at least five of the seven days before the survey.
A class divide was also in evidence with men and women in "managerial and professional" households drinking an average of 15.1 units a week and those in "routine and manual" households drinking an average of 11.6 units a week.
Commenting on the survey, Frank Soodeen of the charity Alcohol Concern, told the BBC: "Over the last 20 years middle class families particularly have moved alcohol from the fringe of their lives to the centre of it.
"Because it so available they are drinking almost on a daily basis."
