Article: Government to examine link between binge-drinking and cheap alcohol
The home secretary has pledged to examine the relationship between rising binge drinking rates and the price of alcohol.
Speaking on BBC One's Politics Show, Jacqui Smith said the government is taking a "serious look" at the evidence behind this link, saying: "There is not one single, simple solution to this. But we do need to look at the impact of price and that's what we're doing as a government."
Her comments came after the president of the Association of Chief of Police Officers suggested that cheap alcoholic drinks may be fuelling a rise in under-age binge drinking.
During an appearance on BBC Two's Newsnight, Ken Jones also urged parents to take responsibility for their children's behaviour and constrain their access to alcohol.
Ms Smith added that she believed action needs to be taken about "irresponsible promotions", which encourage binge-drinking.
New information released by the Home Office has revealed that fifty percent of alcohol supplied to teenagers is bought over the counter.
