A groundbreaking scheme in California uses cookery training to try to help former addicts stay off drugs and alcohol.
Lodi is home to the Salvation Army's three month cookery course, designed to give recovering addicts an opportunity to move on with their lives, as reported by the Record.
The online news provider spoke to the seven current students, who have all recently completed rehab programmes for their drug or alcohol dependence.
Chef John Britto, who instructs the programme, told the Record: "They're hungry for this type of direction and instruction."
The aim of the programme is to give participants direction, as well as hope that there are prospects for the future after recovering from an addiction. It also provides scope for work in the food industry which offers a huge range of opportunities.
Participant Laurie Keef, 48, told the news provider: "It's important for us to move on in our lives in a profession we all enjoy," adding: "The sky's the limit in the kitchen."
