Article: Fathers-to-be warned to keep off alcohol and drugs
Scientists have warned men not to smoke, drink or take drugs if they are planning to have children.
New research has found that the intake of toxins can damage sperm and affect the genes of babies, according to the Guardian.
Although it has been known for years that pregnant mothers should not drink alcohol or use drugs, these new findings reveal that it is just as important for men to ensure that they refrain from using these substances when trying to conceive.
The paper reported that health expert Cynthia Daniels, of Rutgers University in New Jersey, said: "Men who drink excessive amounts of alcohol produce higher rates of sperm with abnormalities."
During the study carried out on rats, Matthew Anway of the University of Idaho found side effects from the intake of toxins such as damaged prostates and kidney problems were present up to four generations later.
The Department of Health recently issued new guidelines warning that women should avoid drinking alcohol altogether when pregnant or trying to conceive, replacing previous recommendations that a small amount of alcohol could be safely consumed.
