Article: Employers helping to tackle alcohol abuse
Alcohol-related problems are costing Welsh businesses at least £2 billion every year and one charity has set up a programme aimed at employers to help deal with the issue.
Absenteeism and sub-standard work are two of the problems for businesses, which will no doubt welcome the decision of Cardiff charity Pen yr Enfys to devise two management support projects.
An awareness course aimed at both managers and staff is available, and there is also a programme targeted at senior managers. These are designed to outline the signs of alcohol abuse and the ways in which it can impinge on a regular working day.
Steve James, corporate director at Pen yr Enfys, said that employers are in a position to help workers who are suffering from alcohol addiction or drink-related problems, reports the Western Mail.
"Last year in Wales there was a 40 per cent increase in the number of people suffering from alcohol-related illnesses, with more than 15,415 people receiving some form of treatment," he stated.
"It is becoming more and more important that employers learn to see the warning signs early and be prepared to handle the problem in an appropriate way."
According to Professor Mark Bellis, director of the North West Public Health Observatory, one in 20 people are drinking enough alcohol to make alcohol-related diseases "practically inevitable".
