Article: Choosing an alcohol clinic can depend on funding
Alcohol addiction is an unfortunately common occurrence in the UK and in many cases those who suffer can find it difficult to know where to turn to. There are many different types of alcohol addiction clinic, and deciding which one to choose can be tough. It is becoming increasingly difficult as in many areas budget cuts are leading to the closure of some alcohol addiction clinics. In Southampton for example one of their clinics closed due to lack of funding in 2006, and this has had a huge impact on access to treatment in this area (BBC News, 2006).
It is frustrating for many people seeking help that in order to access treatment as soon as possible, they may have to find the funding to pay for one of the private alcohol clinics available. Unfortunately many people are not able to afford the private price, and waiting lists for free treatment can be up to two years. It is not ideal, and in some cases can be disastrous to make people who need treatment wait in order to receive it. It can be that those who cannot access treatment as soon as possible can feel rejected and disappointed at the result, and may return to drinking. It could potentially be very damaging for someone who has summoned the courage to access treatment, to be told that they are not able to as they cannot afford it, and in some cases individuals may not try again to seek out treatment, due to the negative experience the first time. It is important that people are able to receive help when they need it, and should be rewarded for their courage in seeking help. It should be made easier for an individual to get help and be admitted to an alcohol clinic if they are ready to begin the healing process.
