Article: Children breathalysed under new pilot
If pilots in North Wales are deemed to be successful, children across the country could face being breathalysed and having their drinks checked for alcohol.
According to reports in the Guardian, police officers are currently testing the initiative which aims to battle the growing problem of underage drinking in Britain.
But charities have argued that the plans do not go far enough to curb the culture of teen binge drinking.
A spokesperson for the Children's Society told the paper: "We can only effectively tackle the issue by addressing the wider binge-drinking culture," while Alcohol Concern echoed these sentiments noting: "We need to be wary of gimmicks."
The pilot scheme will allow police to stop teenagers in the street to be tested for alcohol and those who fail the test will be taken home to their parents.
Earlier this month, the chancellor Alistair Darling announced tax hikes for alcohol, in a bid to tackle the UK's binge drinking culture.
