Article: Alcohol treatment for teenagers soars
New figures show that more children than ever are receiving treatment for alcohol abuse in the east of England region.
A total of 31 children under the age of 14 were admitted to the region's hospitals in just 12 months after drinking too much, official figures show.
Dr David Hodgkinson, clinical director for emergency medicine at Ipswich Hospital, told the Evening Star there had been an increase in children admitted to hospitals in Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire after drinking excessively.
"They tend to be slightly younger and more frequent. Alcohol intoxication can kill and does kill particularly in that young age group," he said.
"It is concerning and we have got to educate children from a young age about the risks and dangers."
Dr Amanda Jones, Suffolk PCT deputy director of public health, added: "People who become dependent on alcohol later on in life often start drinking before the age of 14 - so the consequences can be both immediate and long term."
