New research suggests that although having one alcoholic drink a day can have positive health benefits, any positive effects disappear once two are drunk.

Researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the Toronto General Hospital carried out a study to assess the impact of alcohol on the heart.

They also dismissed long-held beliefs that red wine is specifically effective against heart disease, claiming that all alcohol has a virtually identical effect on the heart and blood vessels.

The South Florida Sun Sentinal reported that Dr. John Floras, director of cardiology research at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, said: "We had anticipated that many of the effects of one ethanol drink would be enhanced by red wine.

"What was most surprising was how similar the effects were of red wine and ethanol. Any benefits that we found were not specific to red wine."

The researchers found that after one alcoholic drink, the blood vessels of 13 volunteers appeared more 'relaxed'.

But after two drinks, the blood pressure of the participants noticeably increased.

The study only examined the effects of drinking on one occasion rather than over a prolonged period of time.

It was published in the American Journal of Physiology, Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
