Alcohol Treatment Research: Alcoholics 'less able to perceive danger'
A new study has shown that alcoholics have certain deficits in their ability to detect dangerous or negative situations.
Using functional magnetic imagery (fMRI), scientists have discovered that alcoholics are limited in their capability for interpreting emotions.
The fMRI showed that when alcoholics are confronted with a negative face emotion, their brains are less responsive.
Hence, when alcoholics enter a place where alcohol may be purchased, they do not see it as a potentially dangerous situation and do not perceive that this could allow them to relapse.
Andreas Heinz, director and chair of the department of psychiatry at Charite - University Medical Centre Berlin said: "Alcoholic patients are known to be sensation seekers and are less likely to shy away from signals that suggest danger.
"Now we can begin to understand why patients have problems avoiding dangerous situations and, particularly, why they may not react to the concerns of their friends and relatives: the brain area that should help them appreciate these concerns is functioning at a reduced level."
As a form of helping alcohol treatment, Professor Heinz added: "Patients with strong brain responses to pleasant pictures have a reduced relapse risk. So, relatives and friends may want to support alcoholic patients with positive messages that strengthen their self-esteem while being particularly careful, and even repetitive, in pointing out the dangers of alcohol and alcohol-associated environments."
