Rehab News: Research: Alcohol abuse impacting on students' academic performance
New research suggests that excessive alcohol consumption is damaging the academic performance of students.
A study conducted at Edge Hill University suggests that students who drink large amounts of alcohol achieve lower results than their IQ level would suggest they were capable of.
Researchers found that alcohol intake appeared to be the strongest predictor of academic success, with marks decreasing exponentially the more alcohol is consumed by the student.
However one of the authors of the study, Dr Philip Murphy, said it had not been possible to determine whether these results were directly related to excessive alcohol consumption, "or to the lifestyle factors associated with heavier alcohol use which may get in the way of studying".
He told the Liverpool Echo that the consumption of the substance could have a dramatic impact on academic results, saying: "The more [the students] used the less well they did and it could have meant the difference between a class of degree".
The Department of Health advises that men should refrain from drinking more than three or four units of alcohol per day, while women should limit their daily intake to two to three units of alcohol.
