The seminar - The treatment of alcoholism: How recent research impacts on clinicians – will be held at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London on Friday 18th July. The details are below.
Small Lecture Theatre
from 13:00, Friday, 18 July 2008
ends 14:00, Friday, 18 July 2008
Description
In recent years there have been a number of large, expensive clinical trials, some very complicated, that have been designed to have an impact on clinical treatment. Unfortunately, the trials are not all congruent and thus the clinician can rightfully feel confused. The recent set of commentaries in the May 2008 issue of the journal Addiction highlights some of the controversies. This presentation will attempt to address these controversies and present data that may have a current impact on treatment and potential impact for the future. Although the average physician is uninformed about the successes of treatment for addictive disorders, indeed there has been considerable progress in recent years and compares well with the results for other chronic illnesses. The world is still hoping for a complete cure, but this escapes the medical profession's grasp for virtually all chronic diseases. Alcoholism may be one of the first to benefit from the genomic revolution and all specialists should be aware of these advances.
Speakers
Guest speaker: Professor Charles O'Brien, University of Pennsylvania
