Rehab News: Researchers say an existing drug could cut alcohol cravings
A new study has shown that an existing drug may successfully cut alcohol cravings in addicts, according to reports by Reuters Health.
The US National Institutes of Health carried out research on the drug LY686017, which is known to inhibit the brain's stress response.
Researchers surveyed 50 recovering alcoholics, giving 25 the drug and 25 a placebo.
The study, reported in Science Express, found that those who took the drug reported about 50 per cent fewer alcohol cravings.
To account for the lack of real-life stresses during the experiment that would normally be expected to enhance alcohol cravings, the participants were subjected to a mock interview for their dream job.
Following the interview, they were allowed to smell alcohol and those who had taken the drug were found to have produced less of the stress hormone cortisol than those on the placebo.
Dr. Markus Heilig from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Bethesda, Maryland, told Reuters Health: "Rather than trying to block the pleasurable drug effects, anti-stress treatments may be an attractive strategy for treatment of alcoholism."
