The number of people admitted to hospitals in Leicestershire suffering from alcohol-related illnesses has almost tripled in the past five years.

Staff at Leicester hospitals are treating, on average, 575 patients each month for alcohol abuse, the Leicester Mercury reports.

A total of 6,065 people were treated for conditions caused by excessive drinking in the year ending April 2007, compared with 2,147 in 2002/20003.

Consultant hepatologist Allister Grant told the paper: "It's a staggering increase, but it just reflects what we are seeing on the ground.

"We are very aware that alcohol is a major problem.

"There are lots of people involved in trying to improve things, from Leicester City Council, to police to medical professionals.

"I've been here for three years and it's becoming more and more of a problem, and it's a significant burden to the hospitals."
