Rehab News: New drug treating effects of alcohol addiction
An Australian company has announced successful results of a drug trial, revealing the effectiveness of the drug Ropren in combating the effects of long-term alcohol dependence.
Clinical trials were carried out by Solagran Limited between 2006 and 2007, providing evidence of effectiveness in treating the effects of second-stage chronic alcoholism.
Results of the trial, which monitored 60 experimental patients and 30 control patients, included the improvement of the functioning of the liver, pancreas and kidneys, normalisation of blood sugar and cholesterol levels and an improvement in cognitive function.
The drug, which was administered for a month, was also found to have an anti-depressant effect for many of the patients, as well as rapid control of alcohol abstinence syndrome.
Trials also showed that unlike other treatments, the length of time the patient had been suffering from alcoholism did not affect the efficacy of Ropren.
Last month Solagran was awarded a patent for the use of Ropren in the treatment of conditions arising from long-term addiction to both alcohol and drugs.
